3 mo. Half-off Gold & Platinum
Earv Archambeau ran, caught passes, played defense and even threw the ball, as he  almost single-handedly won Avon their fourth state championship in the last six years  against an overmatched Gettysburg Battlers squad 37-8. It was also Avon head coach Tom Culver's 100th win of his coaching career.

Avon wasted no time in getting the scoring started in this championship game, with  running back Earv Archambeau taking a pitch right for 56 yards on the game's opening  drive. Two plays later, the Pirates were in the end zone for the first time on a 15- yard run by Chris Broz. Archambeau tacked on the two-point conversion and Avon led 8 -0 1 minute and 52 seconds into the game.

Gettysburg was unable to get anything going offensively for much of the game, going  three plays and punting on two of their first three drives of the game, garnering  only 90 yards of total offense in the first half. Meanwhile Avon's offense put on a  13-play grinding drive that ended when quarterback Adam Oster tossed a shovel pass to  Archambeau, who eluded several Gettysburg defenders, scoring on the 29-yard pass  play. The conversion failed, and Avon led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Gettysburg's offense started to wake up late in the first quarter, getting a 31-yard  run from running back Jared Schrempp on fourth-and-six. They proceeded to drive to  Avon's 10-yard line, but this drive's story did not have a happy ending for the  Battlers. On fourth and five, Quarterback Jeffrey DeVine threw a pass intended for  Blaine Schmidt, but it was Avon's Kole Wynia that came down with the ball. Three and  a half minutes later, Archambeau broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run, capping a  five-play, 89 yard drive that made the score 22-0 going into halftime, but Broz tore  his lateral miniscus in the second quarter that ended his day.

Things appeared to be looking up for the Battlers on the opening drive of the second  half. Schrempp had an apparent 57-yard touchdown run brought back by a holding call  and Gettysburg punted a play later. Avon also had a touchdown run by Jeff Bertus in  the third quarter brought back by an illegal block in the back penalty. Archambeau  saved the drive with a 22-yard run on fourth-and-3. That put the ball at the  Battlers' 15-yard line. Archambeau completed the touchdown trifecta (rushing,  receiving, passing) by throwing to Marshall Cihak on the next play for the score. The  conversion succeeded, and Avon had a firm 30-0 lead with 4:09 left in the third  quarter.

Schrempp got a 22-yard run of his own on the next drive, but couldn't make it pay  off, as the Battlers lost nine yards over the next three plays and ended up punting.
Avon was in the end zone three plays later, when Bertus broke a 54-yard run that with  the extra point by Cihak made the score a 37-0 rout with 44 seconds remaining in the  third quarter. Avon went on to win the game easily, though Gettysburg did end the shutout with 2:29 remaining with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Schempp.

Archambeau was named the Joe Robbie Most Outstanding Player, gaining 213 yards  rushing on 15 carries with one rushing touchdown, one passing touchdown, and one receiving touchdown.  Avon outgained Gettysburg in the game 447-201 and  got 20 first downs to the Battlers' seven. Schmidt led the Battlers with three carries  for 37 yards.
